Overview

Brex in AI assistants (ChatGPT and Claude) lets you quickly access your Brex information without leaving your AI workspace.

What you can do

  • Expenses: See recent expenses and filter by date, amount, or merchant. Identify items missing receipts.
  • Reimbursements: Check payout ETAs for approved reimbursements.
  • Spend limits: View available limits, remaining balance, and period.
  • Cards (without card numbers): See the cards you can use and their status.
  • Admins (optional): Card admin and account admin can ask high-level company spend questions.

Tip: Add filters like a date range, merchant, or amount to narrow results.

Brex in ChatGPT

Use the Brex app in ChatGPT to quickly see your Brex information without leaving ChatGPT. You can check recent expenses, find items that need receipts, view reimbursement payout ETAs, look up your cards (without card numbers), and see your spend limits.

Important: The ChatGPT app is read-only. To approve or reject expenses, upload receipts, edit memos, create reimbursements, lock cards, or change spend limits, use the Brex dashboard or Brex app.

Note: When you use the Brex app in ChatGPT, your queries and responses are processed by OpenAI in accordance with your organization’s ChatGPT plan and OpenAI’s data retention and privacy policies. Please refer to your organization’s agreement with OpenAI and OpenAI’s privacy documentation for details on data handling and retention practices.

Brex MCP

Early access

Brex MCP lets you connect AI assistants like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor directly to your Brex account. Once connected, you can ask your AI questions about your company's spending, cards, and expenses in plain language, without leaving your AI tool.

For example, you could ask:

"What did the engineering team spend on SaaS last month?"

"Show me my bank account transactions from the last week?"

"Show me all unapproved reimbursements over $500."

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants securely access external tools and data sources. Brex's MCP server uses your existing Brex API credentials and respects the same role-based permissions you've already set up; your AI only sees what your user account is allowed to see.

MCP features

Brex MCP exposes read and write capabilities across core Brex resources. Common use cases include:

Expense and transaction analysis

Query transactions, card expenses, and reimbursements with filters -- by date range, merchant, employee, department, compliance status, or spend limit.

Card and spend limit management

Retrieve card details, check limits and statuses, and get a real-time view of cardholder activity.

Banking

View business account balances, monitor cash positions, and look up banking transactions -- wires, ACH, checks, and transfers.

Vendor and bill management

Look up vendors, view bills and purchase orders, get account balance information, and review vendor activity history.

Travel

View upcoming trips, flight and hotel bookings, group events, and policy compliance -- across your team or company-wide.

Accounting

Check your active accounting integration, view GL accounts, and look up accounting records by source type or review status.

User and department administration

Search users, departments, cost centers, and locations -- useful for admins doing audits or onboarding workflows.

Reporting and statements

Generate and download account statements in multiple formats for bookkeeping or period-end reporting.

For the full list of available tools and capabilities, see Brex MCP -- Developer Documentation (https://developer.brex.com/docs/mcp).

MCP security and access control

Brex MCP is available to any Brex account with Developer API access enabled. The AI assistant operates under the permissions of the credentials used to authenticate, and can only access data that the associated user or service account is permitted to view or modify.

If your organization has not yet enabled Developer API access, an admin can do so from Settings > Developer > API.

Two ways to authenticate

  • OAuth: Scopes are handled for you. When you connect, the MCP server requests exactly the permissions its tools require, and you approve them in the authorization prompt. No manual configuration is needed.
  • API token: The MCP server respects the scopes provisioned on the token. If a scope is omitted (for example, cards read), the corresponding tools will be unavailable. The server will never attempt to access resources outside what the token permits. You can generate and scope tokens from Settings > Developer > API.

We recommend granting only the scopes your AI workflow actually needs when using API tokens.

All actions taken via the MCP server are recorded as the MCP client on behalf of the authenticated user when using OAuth.

Getting started with Brex MCP

Full setup instructions including how to configure your AI client, authenticate with Brex, and scope your API token can be found in the developer documentation: Set up Brex MCP.

At a high level, setup involves the steps below:

Prerequisites [Admin only]

Troubleshooting

Can’t connect

  • Make sure your company has access to the Brex app in ChatGPT.
  • Sign in with your work email (single sign-on if configured).
  • Ask a Brex admin to enable the integration at Settings > Beta features.

Results look incomplete

  • Your role may not allow you to access specific data related to expenses or cards. If not access related, try a narrower query (add a date range, merchant, or amount).

Reimbursement payout date not showing

  • The reimbursement may not be approved yet, or a payout date has not been scheduled.
